RESEARCH

"Who said pleasure wasn't functional?"

Charles Eames

Globalization has changed the way we view and interact with the workplace. Offices are no longer concerned with employees sitting in cubical from 9-5, rather there about building a community of colleagues working together under one shared purpose.

By opening up the office and bringing in textures, materials, colours and seating system that traditionally are deemed for domestic use into the office space it transition from a dry mindless workplace into a calm creative atmosphere. This idea of domesticating the office is known as the "Living Office" movement.

DETAILING

"The details are not the details. They make the design." - Charles Eames

FORO is built using bent steel tubing frame, bent Baltic birch plywood seat and back veneered with engineered wood and upholstered with industrial felt, cast steel brackets (or metal adaptive manufacturing for low production). The steel tubing is finished off with either powder coating or polish gloss finish.

CONCEPT

"Good design makes a product understandable"

- Deiter Rams

We wanted to return to the basics of design, stepping away from the gadget culture we live in. Avoiding the arbitrary by stripping aside any unnecessary features leaving just what is needed. FORO is an organic experience you do not have to learn how to use it.

FORO draws inspiration from the bent plywood of the American Modernistic movement to the curved tubing of the Bauhaus era to the organic nature of wood and fabric from both Japanese and Scandinavian minimalism. The elements are reworked in a new fresh way allowing it to have a perfect blend of classic and modern. This allows FORO to compliment any office spaces' pre-existing design.

PROTOTYPING

"Prototyping is the conversation you have with your ideas" - Tom Wujec

For the prototyping we used, a custom bent steel tubing frame, bent Baltic birch plywood seat and back veneered with engineered wood and upholstered with 100% felted wool; 3D printing reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) allowed for a customized chair and table brackets. The chair frame was then finished off with a black plastic deep coating or polish steel with a clear coating.  Everything but the bent tubing was fabricate by us even down to the 3D printing.

FINAL DESIGN

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication"

- Leonardo Da Vinci

FORO is not just a lounge chair system it's a portable work system that will bring together people and encourage the cross-pollination of ideas. The comfortable seat and angel encourage work while allowing you to relax your body letting the ideas to flow out. With its versatile design and strong construction, this chair is the perfect addition to the office spaces of today and tomorrow.
